Although you may
not be able to visit a materially poor person or
family in a crowded shelter or walk-up apartment
in the New York City Metropolitan area, you can
help to make it possible for a LAMP Missionary
to do so. |

Sr.
Mary Haase, DLJC, knocks on the doors of a
homeless shelter in the Bronx.

The 'homeless
poor' are very much with us these days. If
our lives have become more unsettled, when
can imagine a little better what the daily
lives of the homeless are like. The New
York Times recently presented this
information about homeless families in New
York City:
- As of
September 2002, The NYC Homeless Shelter
system was housing 8,696 families, a 33%
increase since September 2001*.
- The
number of homeless in the city has
reached an all-time high, with 67,000
people, including 16,000 children
staying in shelters each night.**
Since 1983,
LAMP has been serving among the homeless of
the city, and a few years later began to
serve in the homeless shelters that rose
everywhere in the city. We are most
privileged to shelter these families in our
hearts, and lead them to or remind them of
the Heart of Jesus, which is beating with
love for them. As we knock on their doors,
He knocks on the doors of their hearts,
beckoning them to come close and rest in
him, and let him lead the way out of the
homeless cycle. The lives of countless
homeless people have been transformed
through LAMP's presence. Many have sought
to become baptized Catholics, to have their
children baptized or receive other
Sacraments, or have come back to Mass and
the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Please know that YOU are with us as we
minister the love of the Lord Jesus to
homeless families.
